Shafaqna English– Extreme drought and heat have caused water levels in Serbia’s Danube River side channels to drop dramatically, leaving only small shrinking ponds where fish are struggling to survive in dangerously warm water.
Fishermen warn that the overcrowded juvenile fish face mass death if conditions worsen. This summer’s severe weather has devastated fish farms and ecosystems across multiple European countries, including Slovenia, Bosnia, the Czech Republic, Romania, and Hungary, with damages reaching millions of euros.
The crisis has compounded existing problems such as energy shortages, crop failure, and disrupted trade. In response, governments and businesses are now seeking ways to prepare for future extreme weather events linked to climate change, as this year’s crisis has exposed their lack of readiness.
