Shafaqna English- A powerful earthquake hit western Colombia early Monday(10 Aug 2026) morning, killing at least 82 people, toppling buildings in various cities, and leaving many still buried under debris.
The earthquake occurred just days after Abelardo De La Espriella was inaugurated as president, plunging his fledgling administration into its first major crisis, with the memory of twin destructive quakes in neighboring Venezuela from June still lingering.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the 7.4-magnitude quake occurred at a depth of 107 km near San Jose del Palmar in Choco, a sparsely populated province on Colombia’s Pacific coast, yet its tremors were felt in major cities across the country.
