Mexico clears thousands of tons of sargassum seaweed

Shafaqna English– Authorities in Mexico are working rapidly to address a record-breaking surge of sargassum, a brown seaweed with a pungent odor, that has been swamping beaches along the country’s Caribbean coast. This area is a critical part of Mexico’s tourism sector, and the invasion of seaweed has created significant environmental and economic concerns.

Data released this week shows that authorities in Quintana Roo, a region that includes the famous tourist destinations of Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum, have collected and disposed of over 105,000 metric tons of sargassum so far in 2024. This amount already exceeds the previous record of 92,783 tons collected throughout the entirety of last year.
