Shafaqna English– The United Nations reported on Wednesday(19 Aug 2026) that humanitarian workers experienced an unprecedented level of violence over the past year, with the escalating frequency of attacks attributed in part to the growing deployment of armed drone technology in conflict zones.
The global body characterized the upward trajectory of such assaults as “appalling,” underscoring the deteriorating security environment for those delivering critical aid.
Statistics released through the Aid Worker Security Database—a platform jointly funded by the governments of Canada and Australia to monitor and record serious security incidents affecting aid operations—reveal that 2025 witnessed 907 cases of humanitarian staff being killed, injured, or abducted.
This compares with 833 such incidents in the prior 12-month period, representing an increase of nearly 9% and reinforcing the UN’s assessment that the protection of aid workers is becoming an increasingly urgent global challenge.
