US: Maritime waiver renewed to curb gasoline price rises

Shafaqna English- The White House announced on Monday(10 Aug 2026) that President Trump had extended a 90-day waiver that allows foreign-flagged ships to move oil and other cargo between U.S. ports. At the same time, he imposed new restrictions in response to arguments from domestic shipbuilders and their backers in Congress, who claimed the waiver was weakening America’s maritime industry.

The 90-day renewal, which was finalized on Monday, takes place amid growing disruptions to global oil shipments caused by the conflict with Iran, which has driven up fuel expenses. This situation has intensified the pressure on the Trump administration to identify measures that can alleviate logistical choke points and prevent additional increases in gasoline and broader energy costs.
