Drought threatens French agricultural crops

Shafaqna English– Analysts have warned that the combination of unrelenting heatwaves and prolonged drought could cut France’s maize output in half this season. As a consequence, total corn production across the European Union is expected to shrink to its smallest volume in several decades. However, there is some optimism that Poland and Romania may fare better, with their crops likely to withstand the adverse conditions more effectively.

At the end of July, the European Commission revised downward its estimate for the 2026/27 EU maize harvest, projecting a total of 51.9 million metric tons — the lowest annual figure recorded since 2007. However, some analysts are now suggesting that actual production could dip below 50 million tons for the first time since the 1990s, reflecting an even more pessimistic view of the damage caused by extreme weather.
