Shafaqna English– A devastating wildfire tore through the Greek island of Salamina on Sunday(16 Aug 2026), claiming two lives and injuring several others, according to official reports. The blaze, fueled by strong winds and dry conditions, advanced with alarming speed across the island, which lies just a short distance from the Greek capital. The tragedy unfolded on the busiest holiday weekend of the summer, when the island was crowded with visitors.
Throughout the European continent, a series of consecutive heatwaves has significantly worsened drought conditions, placed considerable strain on freshwater reserves, and reduced plant life to extremely dry, highly flammable material. These conditions have collectively contributed to massive wildfires in Spain, France, and Greece, which have collectively burned areas of land approaching record-breaking levels.
