Shafaqna English– On Saturday(22 Aug 2026), the director of an organization dedicated to defending the rights of migrants reported that at least 13 Tunisian nationals have been reported missing following the sinking of a vessel carrying migrants off Tunisia’s Mediterranean coastline.
The boat was en route to Italy when the tragic incident occurred, and search efforts have so far managed to rescue only two survivors from the treacherous waters.
In an interview with Reuters, Mostafa Abdelkebir, the president of the Tunisian Observatory for Human Rights, revealed that the boat had set out in the early hours of Thursday.
He noted that the majority of those on board were young people, and notably, the passenger list included seven members of a single family unit, as well as a married couple consisting of a man and his expectant wife, highlighting the human toll of irregular migration from Tunisia.
