UK government support for drought-affected farmers

Shafaqna English– On Saturday(15 Aug 2026), UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced that he had approved an additional £65 million ($88 million) in emergency financial assistance for agricultural producers who have suffered significant losses due to the ongoing drought conditions. This decision comes in direct response to the unprecedented dry spell that made July the driest month ever documented in both England and Wales since meteorological records began.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Burnham elaborated on the government’s commitment, stating: “We are allocating an additional £65 million today to help farmers endure the current drought while simultaneously building resilience for future summer seasons. These agricultural workers stand at the very forefront of climate change impacts, and it is our responsibility to ensure they do not have to confront these challenges without adequate state backing.”
