Shafaqna English– At the commencement of a high-stakes trial that carries the potential to fundamentally alter the landscape of some of the world’s most widely used social media applications, Meta Platforms formally denied allegations brought forward by a coalition of U.S. states.
The accusations contend that the company deliberately engineered its Facebook and Instagram platforms to foster addictive behaviors among young users, prioritizing corporate profits over child welfare and mental health.
The legal complaint filed by 29 U.S. states spanning both political parties represents one of the most aggressive regulatory actions taken against a major tech company in recent history.
The states are seeking a dual remedy: first, a financial penalty that could amount to hundreds of billions of dollars, serving as a deterrent against future corporate misconduct; and second, a series of injunctive measures requiring Meta to fundamentally restructure its approach to child safety, algorithm transparency, and data privacy—reforms that could set new precedents for the entire social media industry.
