Shafaqna English- Afghanistan is the only country in the world where girls and women are prohibited from accessing secondary and higher education, according to UNICEF.
The restrictions began shortly after the Taliban returned to power in August 2021. The authorities issued a decree banning girls from attending school beyond sixth grade, a measure that has continued to prevent millions of girls from pursuing their education.
The school ban is part of a broader set of restrictions affecting the rights and daily lives of women and girls in Afghanistan. More than 100 decrees and measures have restricted their access to education, employment, movement and public spaces, according to the United Nations.
“The situation is truly heartbreaking,” said Daniel Timme, UNICEF Afghanistan chief of communications.
During a recent visit to Daikundi province in central Afghanistan, Timme said he met a 15-year-old girl in tears who pleaded for help to return to school.
“The school ban has to end because it’s stealing the future of millions of girls,” Timme said.
