Half of Afghan women forced to remain indoors

Shafaqna English– Fresh data released by UN Women on Wednesday(12 Aug 2026) reveals that half of Afghanistan’s female population now exit their homes no more than twice a month on average. The Taliban-enforced edicts have systematically curtailed their right to free movement and excluded them from public spheres, leaving most women effectively confined to their households.

The same UN body, whose mission is to advance gender equality, further noted that as the Taliban gear up to commemorate their fifth year back in power this week, Afghanistan continues to hold the dubious distinction of being the world’s sole nation that prohibits adolescent girls from accessing secondary schooling and outright bans women from university enrollment.
