Earthquakes continue in southern Spain

Shafaqna English1. Official reports released on Wednesday(19 Aug 2026) confirmed that the city of Granada, located in the southern reaches of Spain, experienced no fewer than ten seismic tremors during the overnight hours. This cluster of earthquakes represents the latest chapter in a sequence of underground disturbances that first emerged in the area five days earlier.

Although the quakes have not resulted in major casualties, authorities have documented minor injuries among residents, alongside visible structural harm to several buildings, raising concerns about the integrity of older constructions in the historic city center.

In response to the ongoing tremors, a wide array of commercial establishments—including retail stores, places of worship, and cultural institutions—opted to remain closed throughout the day, while municipal authorities took the additional step of shutting down government offices as a preventative measure against potential aftershock damage.

Meanwhile, local news outlets described a populace divided in its coping strategies: one segment of the population sought refuge along the coastal areas, believing open spaces near the sea offered greater safety, while another contingent refused to re-enter buildings altogether, choosing instead to camp out in parks and plazas, driven by an acute fear of structural collapse during subsequent quakes.
