Romania’s urgent move to cool its nuclear reactor

Shafaqna English– In a Saturday(22 Aug 2026) announcement, the Romanian government’s press office confirmed that the country’s National Committee for Emergency Situations has formally endorsed a series of new operational measures designed specifically to raise the water level of the Danube River.

This strategic intervention is primarily intended to secure an adequate and continuous water supply for the cooling systems of the Cernavoda nuclear power plant, which relies heavily on river water for its thermal regulation processes.

The Cernavoda nuclear power plant continues to remain offline, as the Danube River has dropped to historically unprecedented low water levels, severely limiting the volume of water available for its cooling requirements.

In response to this critical situation, which has also led to a significant reduction in the country’s overall electricity generation capacity, the Romanian authorities have proactively declared a nationwide state of emergency that remains in effect for the entire month of August.
